> 9. Lower barrier to entry – digital photography can be an expensive hobby, especially if you want to turn pro. By contrast, many film cameras can be obtained cheaply second-hand, while still being able to produce excellent images… in the right hands, of course. When comparing medium and large format film cameras, the price difference to digital is especially noticeable.

The cost of quality used 35mm, and 120 format cameras continue to increase. I have searched eBay, Keh and several other websites over the last several years. A lack of supply constraints the market, and the collection keeps dwindling since no one is making new ones to replace the ones that break and become unrepairable.

It seems ludicrous to spend $1000 on a used camera that may fail at any point and become unrepairable.

Comment on Everything to Know about the XMP File Format in 2023 by Harris Sklar https://shotkit.com/xmp-file/#comment-172590 Mon, 23 Jan 2023 18:39:54 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=125973#comment-172590 I have recently attempted to open photograph files that were originally saved as Tiff, JEPG, or DNG. They had not been opened for many years and many of them now opened as XMP files. How could this occur and can I get the original back. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Comment on These are Nikon’s updates to 4 of its Super-telephoto lenses by christophe DANDURAND https://shotkit.com/news/these-are-nikons-updates-to-4-of-its-super-telephoto-lenses/#comment-172545 Sun, 22 Jan 2023 18:04:32 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=149226#comment-172545 Thanks for the links, however where is Nikon’s interest in releasing updates for lenses like the 400mm f2.8 TVCR S, which NOBODY can order, as all pre-orders have been stopped for a long time , the 800mm is still not available since ….. we don’t even know when!!!!! as well as for the 600mm f4 which is following in the footsteps of its 2 predecessors !!!!???
Nikon should rather focus on its customer service as well as on the information of why we cannot have 1 of its 3 lenses!
Thanks for reading and thanks again for the 400mm f4.5 link!

Comment on How to use the Photographer’s Ephemeris to Plan Outdoor Photography Shoots by John Myers https://shotkit.com/photographers-ephemeris/#comment-172542 Sun, 22 Jan 2023 16:31:06 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=108855#comment-172542 Thanks for all the above spendid information in using Photographer’s Ephemeris. I used to use it a few years ago and then it disappeared. Now I see its return and wonder if I can still use it on my Samsung Galaxy 6 which must be at least seven years old. I have been trying unsucessfully to download the app. Is there a minimum requirement do you know now that EP has been updated?

Many thanks

Comment on Why Leica’s resurrection of the M6 35mm camera is great by Jez Lerman https://shotkit.com/news/why-leicas-resurrection-of-the-m6-35mm-camera-is-great/#comment-172486 Sat, 21 Jan 2023 10:12:01 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=149129#comment-172486 This paragraph is unnecessary – it made my films burst free from there canisters so to speak – it ought to have been either cut by the editor or reworked by the writer, alas, that wasn’t the case:

“After all, while anyone can tool around the streets with an old Nikon FM2 or Pentax 35mm camera, someone doing their street photography with the famous red circle logo on their camera is almost sure to spark attention, especially if they explain that it’s a film shooter.”

When I’m shooting candids on the street, the last thing I want is to spark attention, mate. If I owned a Leica I’d cover that damned eye-catching siren of a dot with opaque black industrial tape. There, much better, now I’m invisible in both the shadows and the highlights.

Invisible, I see a Leica photographer in front of me – red dot clear for all to see – gesticulating, animated, excited, showing off his Leica to an enthusiastic fellow. Neither of them aware of my presence. Click, click, click. Hey, I’m getting great shots of this scene. Done, I walk past the scene. Clearly they’re going to be talking for a long time. Good for them, I’ll keep on shooting more scenes in the next street.

At the end of the day it’s the shoot that counts, not that totally annoying red dot. I’d rather come home soaked to the skin, cameras battered and drenched, knowing that the photography went well that day.

For the same $5296 I can buy a complete kit, lighting and all, used and in excellent condition from a competing brand known also for their sturdiness and longevity. I’m talking a couple of bodies, two or three lenses, and a portable light or two.

Meanwhile, my films have returned to their canisters again. Normalcy has returned.

Comment on Remote Shutter Release Guide by Ava https://shotkit.com/remote-shutter-release/#comment-172374 Wed, 18 Jan 2023 23:22:23 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=92765#comment-172374 Very informative, thank you!

My problem is the shutter release mechanism has broken (button popped off), which renders the camera useless. Sony suggested I get a remote shutter release.

Sounds great, but as a senior, I have no idea which one and where to plug it in. I have a Sony DSC-H2, for which
the shutter assemblies are no longer available. It appears this was a recurring fault with these cameras.

Any ideas on which remote shutter release I should look for?

Many thanks

Ava

Comment on Guide to Bracketing in Photography by Mark https://shotkit.com/bracketing/#comment-172372 Wed, 18 Jan 2023 22:48:20 +0000 https://shotkit.com/?p=94411#comment-172372 In reply to Eva.

Bracketing with moving objects doesn’t really work, Eva – in this case, I’d recommend one exposure, then creating an HDR with software such as Luminar Neo.
